Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express

If you are installing the Repair SQL or Retail SQL edition to work with Microsoft SQL Server databases then you will need to install Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or later (desktop, express, or server edition) on one of the network servers or workstations.

To install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express, close all applications that are running and insert the At Your Service installation disc into your CD drive. If the At Your Service program installer starts then cancel it before continuing. Select Run from the Windows Start menu (at the left side of the Windows taskbar). Type in “D:\SQL2005\sqlexpr.exe” (replace D: with the letter of your CD drive if different) and click the OK button. Follow the directions on the screen and accept all default values when prompted. If the install program needs to update system files then it may prompt you to restart your computer.

To install the SQL Server Management Tools Express, select Run from the Windows Start menu (at the left side of the Windows taskbar). Type in “D:\SQL2005\SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi” (replace D: with the letter of your CD drive if different) and click the OK button. Follow the directions on the screen and accept all default values when prompted. If the install program needs to update system files then it may prompt you to restart your computer.

Optionally, you may choose to download and install the latest version of Microsoft SQL Server Express from the Microsoft web site at www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express.

A separate license must be purchased for the full server edition.
